A few weeks ago Marc Niehaus helped us cast a concrete bottom to our pond-pool-tank. He already has one of his own that is integrated into an aquaponic system, and has become an expert in the field. Here his proud son Ethan tries his hand at the wheel of the concrete mixer. See the album of photos, and the article about the construction. The tank-pond-pool should hold roughly 7000 litres. With the extended drought we are in (in many regions of the globe) rain water storage capacity may become necessary for survival. It can be modest, costs can be cut and there are many ways to save water.
Making organic soap and other biodegradable products is easy, as I found at a recent workshop. By making your own you can guarantee that your skin is well cared for with natural cosmetics, and your gray water system is well cared for by using biodegradable soap, washing powders and cleaning agents. Find out more from Guerilla House Cape Town by visiting their face book page.
I went to the Guerilla House workshop on designing a nursery and propagating plants. It was fantastic and I learned so much, as usual. There is too much to tell here, got to my article at :
http://www.greenidiom.com/plant-nurseries.html an album of pictures of some of the stuff I've been growing in recycled containers
See how its done in this article and album of pictures.
I've an album of pictures of my trip to view a regenerating pocket of Afromontaine forest at Newlands and some writing on the possibilities of using this information for a forest regeneration project on 25 sq metres.
If you read anything I write, read this and share it. This is my critique of South African gardening and its participation in drought creation and climate change. But there is a way forward, there is another way to garden. Here we start with suggestions for getting rid of lawn, and the biggest water guzzlers in your home.
The drought brought my longstanding interest in saving water and water-wise gardening, to a boiling head. I've written a series of articles and I'm about 1/3 of the way through now. Here
http://edenfound.weebly.com/water-wise-mulch-ground-cover-and-no-lawn.html are some pictures of the low ground covers growing at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in Cape Town, and available in its nursery, with links at the bottom to my water-wise gardening articles, or you can go directly to the writing here with the first in the series of articles I've completed thus far, from which links will lead you to the others, and are all directly under 'design' in the header navigation bar: http://www.greenidiom.com/drought-tolerant-plants.html Just posted a rainbow of new plant colour albums, just go to this url and click on the link of the colour you want
